MFY’s Nursing Home Residents’ Project provides information, advice and advocacy for nursing home residents and their families.

On February 1, 2012, MFY launched its Nursing Home Residents’ Project (NHRP). The NHRP provides information, advice, and advocacy for nursing home residents and their families, and will provide legal representation in areas of the NHRP’s focus, including abuse and neglect, civil rights violations, improper discharge planning, and unfair consumer practices. The NHRP also provides training and educational sessions to nursing home residents and family councils.

The NHRP tracks trends in the complaints that it receives to support policy advocacy and, where necessary, will bring impact litigation. The NHRP is modeled on MFY’s Adult Home Advocacy Project, which provides trainings, advice, and legal representation that has resulted in systemic reforms that have benefited thousands of New York’s adult home residents.

The NHRP continues the work of Friends and Relatives of the Institutionalized and Aged (FRIA) which, after 35 years of providing information and advice to nursing home residents and their families, suspended its operations in 2011. MFY launched the NHRP to fill this void.

Preventing Unnecessary Institutionalization

Mr. J., a person with a disability, lived with his brother in a rent-controlled apartment. After his brother passed away, Mr. J. was briefly hospitalized. Although he had a rent-controlled apartment where he could live with community-based services, Mr. J. was placed in a nursing home and told that he could not go back to his apartment. MFY prevented Mr. J.’s eviction from his rent-controlled apartment and advocated for the nursing home to provide the required discharge planning. MFY also advocated for Adult Protective Services to provide necessary services. Mr. J. has returned to his apartment, and he is much happier living in the community.
