MFY offers myriad opportunities for members of the private bar and retired attorneys to make an important contribution to MFY’s mission. We provide training and ongoing mentoring to all pro bono attorneys. Some of the ways pro bono attorneys can help are:
Kinship Caregiver Law Project: Represent grandparents and others caring for related children in guardianship, custody, adoption and special immigrant juvenile status proceedings. Tasks: interview clients; prepare papers; conduct court hearings.
Re-Entry Project: Represent people with past criminal records who need licenses in order to re-enter the workforce. Tasks: interview and assist clients to document rehabilitation; conduct administrative hearings.
SSI Project: Assist disabled and elderly low-income clients to obtain Supplemental Security Income benefits or resolve overpayments. Tasks: interview clients; review records; draft pre-hearing memoranda; conduct administrative hearings.
Co-Counsel: Pro bono attorneys have played an important role in MFY’s success, serving as counsel or co-counsel on individual or class action cases and conducting case-related research.
Pro bono attorneys may work in any of MFY’s ongoing projects.
