MFY Legal Services launched the Nursing Home Residents’ Project to provide advice and advocacy for nursing home residents and their families. The Project will represent nursing home residents whoa re facing abuse and neglect, civil rights violations, improper discharge planning, and unfair consumer practices.

MFY’s work to save the homes of hundreds of low-income homeowners in Queens and Staten Island, along with similar work by advocates across the state, is threatened by Governor Cuomo’s failure to include funding for foreclosure prevention and defense in the coming year’s state budget. The Statewide Campaign to Save the Foreclosure Prevention Services Program has issued a statement and asks New Yorkers to immediately contact their state representatives to demand that funding be restored. MFY attorney Elizabeth Lynch spoke to WNYC about the need for advocates to represent homeowners in court.

MFY Foreclosure Attorney Adam Cohen joined scores of advocates at a hearing today to demand continued funding for foreclosure defense and housing counseling for tens of thousands of homeowners who are in foreclosure or are delinquent on their loans. Cohen warned that “Within the next few months, thousands of cases that have been sitting in limbo will pour into the Supreme Court Foreclosure Settlement conference parts. Without advocates for homeowners when the floodgates open, too many homeowners to count will lose their homes to foreclosure unnecessarily.”

NYS High Court Affirms Lawyers’ Right to Meet Freely with Adult Home Residents

The New York State Court of Appeals upheld the right of MFY Legal Services and other advocates to meet freely with adult home residents and found that “guidelines” issued by adult home operators cannot override state regulations. The decision will allow isolated and vulnerable residents to continue to seek assistance from advocates without fear of threats or retaliation.

The New York Daily News reports that residents at the Garden of Eden home in Brooklyn charge that home threatens them with eviction and bullies them if they complain about conditions or ask for help with medical problems. MFY has filed suit against the New York State Department of Health for failing to enforce regulations that protect residents.
